We got a home! And we are so thankful for a safe and beautiful place to live. But with no surprise there have been many problems or in this case lemons with getting our home. To name a few: crappy furniture, broken toilet, no hot water and the latest a broken lock to our door. And here is where our story begins.
A couple of nights ago John and I decided spend the evening together. (Yes we are married but life get’s the best of us and we tend to miss each other in the commotion of life.) Our plan was to go to our rooftop to admire the few God has given us with our dear friend Amy then later we would go get take out and come home and watch a movie.
So we went up to the rooftop and enjoyed the few as planned. But when we came down stairs to get our wallets we could not get the door of our apartment open. The key just kept turning and turning and turning in the lock. Because we don’t speak great Spanish we called our friend Jonathan and asked him to call our Landlord who then called a Locksmith. About an hour later the Locksmith showed up. After assessing the situation he realized this was going to be a big job and that he didm’t have the right tools to fix it so he had to go retrieve the proper tools. Another hour later he came back ready to work. The drill he needs to use though needs electricity to work so here we are around 10:30 knocking on our neighbors door asking to use his electricity. 2 hours later and we finally got into our home. Starving. Tired. and a night wasted?
No, not wasted. When Like gives you lemons make lemonade! With everything here in Spain nothing comes easy and everything takes multiple times to get right. It has been frustrating most of the times. but I am learning to have patience and to open my eyes at what God might be really doing in these moments.
As for the night we couldn’t get into our home when I really took notice I realized this was a huge blessing. Because it took about 2 hours for the locksmith to get to our house we spent those two hours on a bench outside our apartment just chatting about life. It was such a beautiful time spent together. And because the locksmith needed electricity for about 2 hours we were able to meet our neighbor and get to know him a little bit.
How amazing is that! I can’t believe I am saying this but.. I am so thankful that our door was broken! :] Although this particular situation turned out to be a blessing in disguise, there have been and will continue to be so many frustrating things that happen in this transition and just in life in general. I am not always going to be this thankful. But that is why I am writing this story down so that I shall never forget. I continue to pray that my eyes be open to what God is doing in these everyday life challenges. What is God doing in your life today? This week? This month? Have you ever had a moment when everything was going wrong but when you took a step back you thought “ Ok God I see what you are doing”? Let's take a moment to remember God’s work in our lives.
Cause when life gives you a broken door, call the Locksmith.
